Le Jas is a typically Provençal word which describes a shepherd's hut, a place of shelter away from surrounding hamlets. The Alps of Haute Provence still have a number of Jas, you can discover, by chance, during one of your walks.
Le Jas was designed to protect both shepherds and their flocks from predators and from the elements. Le Jas was traditionally built with local materials , often in dry stones, found in the ground by farmers during the preparation of arable land.
